The drought ends Montevideo's drinking water | Videos

The worst drought in 74 years is affecting the main sources of water supply in Montevideo, Uruguay. The shortage forced authorities to use water near the Río de la Plata, which has higher salinity, for daily service.

The government solution has caused serious consequences both for household appliances, which cannot cope with the excess sodium in the water supply, and for the population, as there are complaints about headaches and stomach aches from consuming the liquid.

The price of a six-liter jerrycan of water rose 10% in June from May, according to the Economy Ministry. The government is struggling to deal with the crisis, although President Luis Lacalle Pou warned last week that water quality would likely worsen before it improves.
