Cocca, who won the 2022 Closing Tournament and the 2021 Opening Tournament, said goodbye and said that it is time to step aside so that other people can take on the project of moving the team forward.
“It is a difficult moment, with conflicting parts to this project that we put everything in needs a change and it is we who take a step aside so that the project continues to growthis was with the sports project, we have achieved it, we want to continue in this place, since I arrived, I was a player and this club gave me a lot and I also wanted to give it something, in that sense.
José Riestra, president of Atlas, gave a few words of thanks to Cocca and recalled that the Argentine coach not only saved them from relegation upon his arrival but also had a two-time championship.
“It is a moment of mixed feelings, everything in this life has a cycle and has an end, I remember a little over two years ago, when the institution was going through a very complicated moment, where we analyzed who should assume who would save us from relegation and we we meet Diego and his coaching staff and we set ourselves the goal of transforming this institution and followed the path with two championships.
Cocca became just the third coach to win a two-time championship and brought joy back to Atlas fans after more than 70 years of title drought in Mexican soccer.
In 95 games as manager of Atlas, Cocca recorded 34 wins, 25 draws and 36 losses. Although his best record will be the two-time Mexican soccer championship. This season Atlas could not keep up and is in the seventeenth position with just 10 points in the 16 dates and with 4 losses in the last 5 games.
“Diego I have nothing but words of thanks, for putting us on the map and Alejandro told you in the following days that we will meet again and that we will work together so that you leave this for the rest of our history, ”said Riestra.
