The Actors' Threat: Hollywood Professionals Can Join the Writers' Strike | International

Since May 2, the Writers Union of the United States (WGA) went on strike to demand fairer remuneration for their work on platform productions, which has already involved a dramatic reduction in the number of movies and series on production.

Amid negotiations between screenwriters and major studios, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) may be about to join the writers in what would be the first simultaneous strike in more than six decades. The main demands of both unions include the payment of residuals for streaming productions, as well as the control of the use of artificial intelligence in them.

To date, more than 1,600 Hollywood actors and actresses, including personalities such as Meryl Streep and Pedro Pascal, have added their names to a letter addressed to union negotiators stating they are willing to go on strike. and they worry that "they are willing to make sacrifices that the leaders are not willing to make."

The period in which the negotiations will continue will be until July 12 and thus avoid completely paralyzing the industry, a highly probable scenario if the actors joined the scriptwriters on strike.
