Texas prepares floating wall to stop migrants
Several trucks were seen arriving on Friday, at the border between Eagle Pass and Piedras NegrasCoahuila.
They were loaded with dozens of orange buoys that will be placed in Rio Bravo as a state government measure to “stop the flow of migrants”.
Thus, the government of Greg Abbott launched the construction of a “floating wall” which will be placed in Rio Bravo, a measure announced by the governor last June.
He explained that it was an experimental border barrier that could be turned into a multi-kilometre construction.
“Today begins the installation of a new sea barrier on the Rio Grande,” Abbott wrote, “Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety) is overseeing the project at Eagle Pass.
This is the latest effort under the controversial Abbott's Operation Lone Star programwhich uses the state Department of Public Safety and National Guard troops to arrest immigrants on state charges of trespassing, among other tactics to discourage immigrants from crossing.
Many aspects of Operation Lone Star are being challenged in court.
