The extension of the temporary ceasefire was reached with the mediation of the governments of Saudi Arabia and the United States (USA), in negotiations between the parties that took place in the Saudi city of Jeddah, along the Red Sea.

This new extension is intended to create the environment to carry out talks in search of a long-term ceasefire.

This extension "will provide time for greater humanitarian assistance, restoration of essential services, and discussion of a possible long-term extension," the press release added.

The current truce went into effect on May 22, however both sides exchanged accusations of violating it.

Saudi Arabia and the US said in this regard that, despite these breaches, the truce "allowed the delivery of humanitarian aid to approximately two million Sudanese in need."
