The Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (FAR) paramilitary group reached an agreement to extend for five more days the truce established a week ago and which expired on Monday night.

The special representative of the president of the Sovereign Transitional Council of Sudan, Dafallah Hajj Ali, told television that "we agree to extend the truce and we do not seek war."

The extension of the temporary ceasefire was reached with the mediation of the governments of Saudi Arabia and the United States (USA), in negotiations between the parties that took place in the Saudi city of Jeddah, along the Red Sea.



This new extension is intended to create the environment to carry out talks in search of a long-term ceasefire.

Saudi Arabia and the US, in a statement, welcomed "the agreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces for a five-day extension of the ceasefire agreement they signed on May 20, 2023." ".

This extension "will provide time for greater humanitarian assistance, restoration of essential services, and discussion of a possible long-term extension," the press release added.

The current truce went into effect on May 22, however both sides exchanged accusations of violating it.

Saudi Arabia and the US said in this regard that, despite these breaches, the truce "allowed the delivery of humanitarian aid to approximately two million Sudanese in need."
