A prototype all-electric plane made its first flight in Washington state on Tuesday.
If the US Federal Aviation Administration approves the aircraft to carry passengers, it would be the first fully electric-powered commercial plane, the Seattle Times reported.
The plane, built by the technology company Eviation, is capable of carrying up to nine passengers and two pilots. It took off from Moses Lake, Washington, at 7:10 a.m. and landed eight minutes later.
The company aims to prove that electric aircraft are viable and can reach heights of 4,572 meters (15,000 feet).
The aircraft, designed by engineers in the United States and Israel, is powered by 21,500 small Tesla-type batteries.
