Armed men stole the car of Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar on Monday in front of his residence in Washington, his staff reported, at a time when the number of assaults skyrockets in the US capital.
"Three armed assailants approached the congressman and stole his vehicle" while he was parking, Jacob Hochberg, the Texas legislator's chief of staff, confirmed to AFP.

"Fortunately, he was not injured and is cooperating with local law enforcement," added Hochberg, who thanked the police for their "quick action and for recovering the congressman's vehicle."

Washington has seen a sharp increase in vehicle thefts, with 750 crimes reported so far this year, according to the Police Department.

This represents almost double the crimes of this type that had occurred up to the same date last year in the US capital.

Another congresswoman, Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig, was attacked in February in the elevator of her Washington apartment in an attack her office said was not politically motivated. The legislator escaped and a suspect was arrested.
