Senate urges SEP to include education on animal care in study programs

The Senate of the Republic urged the Ministry of Public Education to incorporate prevention, attention, education and culture focused on animal welfare into the study plans, especially at the basic education levels, in order to raise awareness among girls, boys and adolescents of the responsibilities that come with having a companion animal.

In the opinion, which was approved without discussion, the legislators highlighted that the Mexican Association of Veterinary Doctors Specialists in Small Species estimates that there are around 28 million domestic animals living on the streets; of these, about 12.6 million are dogs.

They also stressed that children who take care of pets learn something fundamental, that the importance of affection and respect for animals is a way of acquiring responsibilities.

The senators indicated that the general laws of Ecological Balance and Protection of the Environment, of Wildlife and the Federal Law of Animal Health contain provisions on animal welfare, to avoid suffering and pain to animal species in their interaction with humans. .

In addition, the Law for the Protection of Animals of Mexico City establishes the provisions of public order and social interest, to protect them, as well as guarantee their well-being, provide them with care, good treatment, maintenance, accommodation, natural development, health and avoid mistreatment, cruelty and suffering.

It also establishes the principles to protect life and guarantee its well-being, and the attributions that correspond to the authorities of Mexico City as in the regulation of dignified and respectful treatment; of their environment and their essential rights, as well as the issuance of environmental regulations regarding the protection of animals.

In addition, it talks about the promotion of the participation of public, private and social sectors, for the care and welfare of domestic animals and the promotion in all public, private, social and scientific instances and the recognition of the ethical, ecological and cultural importance.
