The high command of the Ecuadorian Army indicated that at 05:30 (local time) the operation began with the objective of "maintaining the internal and external security of the penitentiary center" considered the most dangerous in the country.

President Guillermo Lasso reported on his social networks that the security forces carry out the control registry of weapons, ammunition, explosives and prohibited objects inside this center.

“We are going to continue with these controls until the last day of Government as a mechanism to confront corruption in the system and disarm the criminal organizations that operate within the centers. The State has to remain firm in its objective of controlling violence in prisons and on the streets,” added the president.

The intervention is carried out after two days of shootings were reported in the center while the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) recorded two inmates were injured.

On Monday afternoon, clashes broke out and continued into the early hours of Tuesday. In this regard, the SNAI indicated that they were a struggle between the so-called Organized Crime Groups (GDO).

This Tuesday, the Committee of Relatives for Justice in Prisons in Ecuador stated that the confrontations were between prisoners from pavilions 4, 5, 11 and 12 while demanding the intervention of the security forces.
