According to reports, a Russian oligarch apparently killed his wife and teenage daughter with an ax in their Spanish villa before taking his own life.

Local media reports that Sergey Protosenya, 55, who had a fortune of more than $435 million, hacked his wife and 18-year-old daughter to death.

Then he committed suicide in the patio of his villa in Lloret de Maron Spain's Costa Brava, according to local media.

Protosenya graduated in Civil Engineering from Moscow University and served as Deputy Chairman of the Board of Novatek Natural Gas Company for more than seven years.

The Russian family was registered in their villa in Lloret de Mar, but lived in France and visited the Spanish residence as their second home.

Protosenya and his wife Natalia, 53, had two children together, the 18-year-old victim and a teenage son who was in France at the time of the alleged killing spree.

The teenage son called the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) on Tuesday when he was unable to contact any of his relatives for a while.

Officers searched the villa and found Protosenya dead in the courtyard after apparently committing suicide.

Police then found the bodies of his wife and teenage daughter in the house.

According to According to local reports, the police are working on the hypothesis that Protosenya killed them both with an ax while they slept.

Protosenya and her family flaunted their lavish lifestyle on social media.

They enjoyed golfing and traveling the world, often sharing images of their seemingly idyllic life with netizens.

Protosenya had no history of abuse, however police suspect the murders were gender-related and are investigating the case as a femicide. The police investigation is ongoing.
