Riot breaks out in the largest prison in Paraguay due to the case of Oliver Lezcano | International
This Tuesday, prisoners at the Tacumbú Penitentiary, the largest prison in Paraguay, caused a riot and held nearly 40 hostages, according to local media. At least a dozen security agents are in the group of those held, while the rest were made up of women who were visiting their imprisoned relatives.
The prisoners' disagreement arose because days ago the Minister of Justice, Ángel Ramón Barchini, had indicated that the non-commissioned officer of the Paraguayan National Police, Oliver Lezcano, had been murdered inside the prison. The inmates called the version false and pointed out that Lezcano, identified as a suspect in a homicide, had escaped from prison.
As of Wednesday morning, authorities reported that they had regained control of the prison, releasing the inmates and allowing cleaning teams to enter the center.
The Tacumbú penitentiary center houses 2,856 inmates, according to figures from the National Torture Prevention Mechanism. Officially, the prison only has the capacity to accommodate 1,530 inmates.
