Rejection of law against sexual abuse of minors sparks protests in Bolivia | International
The decision of the Chamber of Deputies to reject a bill on sexual crimes against minors has sparked a wave of protests and indignation among citizens and activists, who demand that the regulations be approved.
On Monday, dozens of people mobilized in La Paz to demonstrate their opposition to the decision of Parliament, which rejected the project with 54 votes against, from Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), Citizen Community and Podemos, against 44 in favor and 3 in white . . . .
The bill contemplated making the crimes of pedophilia imprescriptible and creating a truth commission. It was presented by the Government of Luis Arce after El País published in an investigation the content of the diary of the Spanish Jesuit Alfonso Pedrajas, in which he recounts the alleged abuses that he committed against minors in Bolivia.
According to opponents, the structure with which the truth commission would be composed, as well as disagreements about consensual relationships between adolescents were reasons for the rejection of the law.
