Rains in the Dominican Republic leave several dead and damage

The intense rains that have hit the Dominican Republic since last Friday have caused the death of at least nine people and numerous material damages, according to local authorities.

The number of millimeters of rain that has fallen during the last 24 hours is almost 300 in several locations in the national territory, indicated the National Meteorological Office (Onamet).

While the Emergency Operations Center (COE) keeps 30 of the country's 32 provinces on alert, raising those that are in the red level to 14.



According to this organization's bulletin, 7,915 people had to be displaced from their homes, 583 homes were affected and 29 communities were cut off due to floods, landslides or rising rivers.

Likewise, the damaged infrastructures are six roads, five bridges and an overpass.

In addition, 1,795,232 people have been left without drinking water service, 377,782 without electricity, 1,583 homes affected and 17 completely destroyed.

Onamet announced that strong winds will continue to occur, mainly over the Caribbean coast, the southeast and northeast during the next 48 hours.
