Previously, the legislators of the two chambers that make up the parliament had unanimously approved the accession of the new regions, whose population manifested itself in two referendums for joining Russia.

The signing ceremony of the documents did not include statements by the Russian head of state.

Last Tuesday, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, announced that Putin would not make a statement after the signing of the incorporation treaties.

"The president has already intervened with a speech (last Friday), we all saw it and heard it, it was very important," stressed Peskov, who reiterated that "there will be no more statements."

The new regions will keep their current extensions and names, while their officers will be given the status of governors.

Also, during a transition period in those territories, the Ukrainian hryvnia currency will be accepted until 2023, and after that the legal tender will be the ruble.

Lugansk and Donetsk declared themselves people's republics after the 2014 coup in Ukraine, while Kherson and Zaporizhia have been under Russian control since March following the start of the special operation launched by Moscow to demilitarize the Donbas region.
