Prosecutor’s Office of Peru investigates the use of tanks to break into the University | Video

The Peru Prosecutor’s Office An investigation was opened this Tuesday against the Minister of the Interior, Vicente Romero, for the alleged commission of a crime of functional acts by the police operation organized on the campus of the University of San Marcos (UNMSM), in Lima, last Saturday.

The Peruvian government ordered a police operation in the educational center to evict the protesters who had locked themselves in their facilities in a performance that resulted in at least 205 detainees and criticism from international organizations.

Around 400 policemen burst in with tanks and special forces support at the university located in the capital of the country, without complying with the legal procedures for arrests.

“The National Prosecutor opens a preliminary investigation against Vicente Romero, Minister of the Interior, as the alleged perpetrator of the crime of omission of functional actsto the detriment of the State, due to the events that occurred at the UNMSM facilities on January 21,” read a statement released by the Public Ministry on the social network Twitter.

Peru’s Interior Minister Vicente Romero previously explained that the operation took place within the framework of the state of emergencywhich is why the presence of prosecutors was not necessary for the intervention, as denounced by Human Rights organizations.

Organizations such as Amnesty International condemned the “disproportionate use of force” and respect for Human Rights. In social networks they spread photos and videos of what happened that day in the educational institution.

“The state of emergency does not suspend due process. Detainees must have access to their defense at all times and have interpreters if needed. The prohibition of solitary confinement and cruel and inhuman treatment is maintained“, recalled the international organization.
