Prince George's County Council passed legislation Monday, by a vote of 9 to 1, that imposes a 3 percent cap on rent increases for nearly all rental properties in the county during the month. next year.
Joining council members were proponents of the measure and County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who before the vote took place thanked the council for "showing a true understanding of what so many of our residents endure every day."
“This legislation is extremely important to all of us, bluntly…we refuse to allow any county resident to be evicted from their home,” the executive said at a press conference.
“We were recently notified of pending rent increases and they are exorbitant,” Yvonne Corney, who lives in the Marwood Apartments in Upper Marlboro, told the council.
She said some rents at her complex are going up by $400, she said: "I've lived here for four years and I've never been shocked by such a huge increase."
Some people spoke of even higher increases.
In the end, the council members who backed the bill stressed that this deal is only temporary and that a working group will soon be formed to look in depth at "all sides of the problem."
