According to the spokesman for the organizations participating in the strike, José Mercado, the decision was announced after a meeting between the entity, the director of the extension of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, Miguel Medina, and the rector of the Catholic University Nordestana, the priest Isaac Garcia.
“We seek to guarantee peace, the development of San Francisco de Macorís and we identify with the just demands, but we understand that we must give the population a break and this is a sensible decision to lift this call for a standstill by giving a waiting period. so that the authorities expedite and comply with all the demands”, said the director Miguel Medina.
It is worth noting that in its beginnings the strike was called last Monday for 24 hours, although it was extended for one more day as a result of the exacerbation of the mood of the participants,
Among the main demands proclaimed by the demonstrators, the reduction of fuel rates, the high price of the family basket, the elimination of the pension system and private social security stand out; as well as the need to increase the minimum wage for workers.
Likewise, the callers of the strike reject the privatization of the Punta Catalina thermoelectric plant, one of the most important assets in the country’s energy sector.
