Police: Drunk Driver Killed 6-Year-Old Boy; he ran over him three times in front of the victim's grandfather's gaze and even laughed
HOUSTON – A 6-year-old boy died after being run over by a driver who was allegedly drunk in the southwest of the city this Saturday afternoon.
The victim's grandfather told investigators that the driver hit the boy three times in the parking lot of a laundromat located in the 9700 block of Leawood Street at about 6 p.m.
A judge set a combined $600,000 bond for suspect Pedro Alberto Hernandez, who authorities say was serving a five-year sentence of probation for driving while intoxicated.
Hernandez now faces charges of driving while intoxicated and murder.
According to court documents, the 6-year-old boy was walking through the laundromat parking lot with his grandfather when he was hit by Hernandez. The grandfather yelled at Hernandez, who allegedly braked and backed up to hit the boy again. The grandfather yelled at Hernández again and the driver hit the little boy a third time.
The grandfather said Hernandez laughed in front of the grandfather and tried to leave the scene, but the grandfather managed to get Hernandez out of the vehicle and held him until officers arrived on scene.
Hernandez admitted to downing four 16-ounce beers before going to the laundromat where he was going to meet someone who owed him money. The suspect told officers that he did not look at anyone in the parking lot.
Hernandez is scheduled for a court hearing this Monday.
