PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa stressed that each blood and plasma donation made is a valuable and essential gift to guarantee an adequate supply.

“The availability of blood or plasma benefits all patients, especially those who need lifelong or periodic transfusion support. This is the case of patients with sickle cell anemia or thalassemia, or those with other chronic conditions, such as hemophilia, cancer or immunosuppressed patients, ”he explained, within the framework of World Blood Donor Day.

The official expressed his gratitude to all blood donors in the region of the Americas by supporting "giving life" to those who need it.

In addition, he warned that "in many of the countries in our region, demand exceeds supply, and blood services, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, face the challenge of ensuring access to safe, quality blood."

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2021 in the region the average rate of blood donation per thousand inhabitants is 15 units, however, some nations are below the minimum recommended by the entity, which is ten units.

Barbosa emphasized that they need more people across the region to become "life savers" by volunteering to regularly donate blood or plasma."

On the other hand, the entity specified that only 44 countries have been identified, of which six are in Latin America and the Caribbean, use donated plasma to produce plasma derivatives such as immunoglobulins and coagulation factors, considered essential medicines according to the WHO. .
