Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man Wednesday when he approached them with a rusty hatchet in hand, authorities said.
Shortly before 5 am, deputies went to a Midway City-area home following reports of a burglary and vandalizing cars, the Sheriff's Department said in a statement.
Arriving officers were directed to a home where they found a man on a nearby sidewalk holding an axe, the statement said.
"Based on preliminary information, it is believed that the suspect advanced towards the deputies armed with the axe," and they opened fire, the statement said.
A photo of the gun released by the Sheriff's Department showed a weapon with a wooden handle and a rusty blade.
The man died at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.
