OMS advierte que El Niño puede aumentar las epidemias | Noticias
El fenómeno climático El Niño, ligado a las altas temperaturas, podría agravar la malnutrición en algunos países y elevar el riesgo de enfermedades como la chikunguña o el zika en América Latina, advirtió este jueves la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en un informe.

La agencia sanitaria de la ONU destaca a Centroamérica y el norte de Suramérica entre las regiones en "alto riesgo" de sufrir problemas de salud ligados al fenómeno climático.
Específicamente, alerta sobre la situación que podrían afrontar el norte de Perú, Colombia y Venezuela, así como Surinam, Guyana, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala y Nicaragua.
Asimismo, debido a las sequías, se prevé un descenso de las cosechas, lo que provocaría aumento de la malnutrición. Lo anterior también incrementaría los precios de alimentos básicos como el maíz y las legumbres.
Por otro lado, la subida de las temperaturas y el aumento de los almacenamientos de agua en las viviendas contribuyen a la proliferación del mosquito aedes, transmisor de enfermedades como el zika o la chikunguña.
De acuerdo con los meteorólogos, El Niño podría generar un tiempo más seco de lo habitual en Centroamérica, el norte de Brasil y de Perú, Colombia, Venezuela, mientras que podría aumentar la humedad del clima en el extremo sur brasileño, Chile, noroeste de Ecuador y Perú, norte de México, Paraguay y Uruguay.
La OMS también advierte de los posibles efectos sanitarios y humanitarios de El Niño en otras regiones del planeta, particularmente el este de África, el sur de Asia y Oceanía, dado que el fenómeno meteorológico afecta especialmente las temperaturas del sur del Pacífico.
