Oksana Chusovitina, 47, looking for her ninth Olympic Games in Paris 2024
Artistic gymnastics has evolved exponentially in recent decades, but there is a constant that has been maintained for more than 30 years: Oksana Chusovitina, gold medalist in Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships and Asian Games.
the gymnast uzbek, 47 years old, had confirmed that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were his last. A decaffeinated goodbye. With no fans in the stands to honor his legendary career, the judges, coaches and other gymnasts did everything they could to give him a send-off worthy of everything he had given to the sport.
Chusovitina thanked everyone who was in the venue and, with tears in her eyes, told the media that this was her farewell.
But I wasn't ready. In September 2021, just a few months after the Tokyo Games, Chusovitina announced in instagram that he would return to train with the aim of achieving one last medal in a great championship – the 2022 Asian Gamesin his native Uzbekistan.
I cannot end my career without winning one more medal for Uzbekistan.
When that competition was postponed to 2023 due to COVID-19 restrictions, Chusovitina announced that she would focus on qualifying for her ninth Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
“I have thought it through and decided that after the Asian Games, I will also prepare for the 2024 Paris Games,” Chusovitina said in an article by the Uzbekistan Olympic Committee.
Chusovitina debuted at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games with a gold medal as part of the Unified Team, and made history at Tokyo 2020 by being the first gymnast to compete in eight editions.
Although he represented Uzbekistan in the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2016 Games. His second Olympic medal would come 16 years later, representing Germany this time, in Beijing 2008, in the following London 2012 edition, he also dressed in the uniform German.
Oksana Chusovitina withdrew from the 2022 Artistic Gymnastics World Cup to better prepare for this season. In September, at the World Championship to be held in Antwerp, Belgium, she will seek to qualify for Paris 2024.
So far his season could not have started better, with three medals in as many World Cup stops: one silver (Baku) and two bronzes (Cottbus and Doha).
