A Montgomery County police officer is in critical condition after attempting to stop a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 270 early Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred in the early morning, shortly before four in the morning.
Police said a Montgomery County police officer was attempting to stop a suspected drunk driver by getting out of his vehicle and deploying “stop sticks” to deflate the tires on the driver's vehicle.
As the officer engaged the stop levers, the suspect's vehicle struck the officer, according to police.
The vehicle then continued driving and was stopped further along I-270, where a second officer had deployed a second set of stop levers, police said.
Two people, including the driver of the vehicle that hit the agent, are in custody.
The officer suffered serious injuries and was transported to Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by medical evacuation and is in critical condition.
Maryland State Troopers arrived on scene to assist county police with traffic control.
Traffic in both directions on I-270 from Middlebrook Road to Watkins Mill Road was closed for about 30 minutes, giving the helicopter room to land. All northbound lanes remained blocked until around 6 a.m.
