OAS Deploys Electoral Mission in Guatemala Again
An observation mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) will be deployed again in Guatemala, the organization said on Monday.
The decision comes after the country's Constitutional Court ordered the highest electoral tribunal to review the counts of the first round of the presidential election.
The Constitutional Court ordered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on Saturday to review the votes in the first round of the presidential election on June 25, shortly after the party of one of the favorite candidates and its allies challenged the results.
"A technical team made up of observers, observers and specialists in electoral organization and technology will be traveling to Guatemala," the OAS said in a statement, in which it did not specify the day they will arrive in the Central American country.
"The Mission will be present at the new scrutinies and will continue to gather relevant information, with a view to the second presidential round on August 20," the OAS added, also clarifying that this second exercise was not scheduled in its calendar.
Later, the Guatemalan Supreme Electoral Tribunal reported that it would begin reviewing the votes on Tuesday, in response to the mandate ordered by the Constitutional Court over the weekend.
