No military material in Ukrainian nuclear power plants: IAEA
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, testified on Tuesday before the European Parliament that, after inspecting the Ukrainian nuclear power plants, no military equipmentwhich disproves the Russian accusation.
Grossi's remarks came a day after Russia's foreign intelligence service accused kyiv to store Western-supplied weapons in nuclear power plants across the country, an accusation that a senior Ukrainian official dismissed as false.
Yesterday, January 23, a statement from the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia He stated that US-supplied HIMARS rocket launchers, air defense systems and artillery ammunition had been delivered to the Rivne nuclear power plant in northwestern Ukraine.
“Ukrainian armed forces are storing weapons and ammunition provided by the West on the territory of nuclear power plants,” declared the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia and added that an arms shipment had been made to the Rivne power station in the last week of December.
Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine Volodomyr Zelenskiy stated via Twitter that “Ukraine has never stored weapons on the territory of the nuclear power plant, as falsely claimed by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. On the contrary, the Russian Federation has seized the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and is keeping its army there.”
Grossi told the European Parliament that his agency established a permanent presence at all Ukrainian nuclear facilities and on Tuesday ordered inspections to see if any of them contained military material:
The result of those inspections was negative.
It is the second time the IAEA has been able to "disprove accusations of illegal and very dangerous things taking place at these facilities," he said, citing previous accusations about creating a "dirty bomb."
