Nissan recalls more than 236,000 cars for steering wheel control failures

Nissan is recalling more than 236,000 small cars in the United States because front suspension rods can bend and break, causing loss of steering wheel control.

The measure covers some Sentra compact cars from 2020 through 2022. The front suspension wishbones help guide the tires.

In documents released Saturday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan notes that if the bars are bent, they can break and increase the risk of a vehicle accident.

Owners should contact dealers if they feel the steering wheel is out of position or vibrating. Initially, dealers will inspect and replace all bent or broken bars. Once a new design becomes available, they will replace the left and right bridge bars free of charge.

The company will send letters to owners starting October 5. Another letter will be sent once the parts are available.

Many of the same vehicles were recalled in 2021 to address the same issue. Cars repaired on that previous occasion will receive the new parts when they become available.
