The German NGO confirms that there are currently 199 survivors on board the 'Humanity 1' and that the Italian authorities have designated Ancona as the landing port.
However, it also warns that the port “is 1,400 kilometers from the rescue site. They are three days of travel that suppose an unnecessary load for the rescued. A nearest port should be assigned immediately."
Led by the far-right party, Fratelli d'Italia, the government coalition in Italy approved a decree at the end of 2022 that makes the activity of private maritime rescue organizations more difficult.
Under the regulations, rescue ships must immediately report an operation and are assigned an Italian port, which means they cannot, as before, carry out several quick rescue missions in the same area. In addition, they are often assigned ports far north of Italy.
