NFL suspends Calvin Ridley for the entire season after being caught betting on the league
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Monday the suspension until the conclusion of the 2022 season of the Atlanta Falcons wide receiver. Calvin Ridley for betting on league games in 2021.
“There is nothing more fundamental to the success of the NFL and to the reputation of our league They defend the integrity of the game. Ridley is suspended through the conclusion of the 2022 season," the commissioner's statement said. According to the NFL investigation, Ridley placed the bets in late November of last year while he was away from the team.
“No evidence was found to indicate that inside information was used that compromised the game in any way; no evidence to suggest knowledge of the coaches or teammates of their activity with the bets”.
During those dates the receiver of 27 years had announced his temporary retirement from the NFL due to his mental health. She thus shared it in a message on her social networks.
“I need to put football aside at the moment and focus on my mental well-being; I hope this helps me to be the best version of myself in the future. I thank the Atlanta Falcons, my family, and my teammates for all their support,” the player wrote.
Calvin Ridley was one of the best receivers in Atlanta in 2020 and the fifth best in the NFL; he reached 1,374 yards. In 2021, his start was not so lucky and until his retirement he only added 281 yards in five games. Goodell sent a letter to the owner of the Falcons' 18th jersey reminding him of the responsibility he had as a member of the NFL.
"Your actions put the integrity of the game at risk, threatened to damage the public's trust in professional football and potentially undermined the reputations of your fellow NFL players." The commissioner noted Ridley's willingness to admit the mistakes for which he was suspended.
“For decades betting on NFL games it has been considered one of the most significant violations of league policy. In your case, I acknowledge and commend you on your prompt appearance for an interview and for admitting your actions.”
The NFL reported that Ridley will be able to apply to join his team from February 15, 2023.
