According to a statement from the Mariupol City Council, the evacuation of the civilian population will resume at 12:00 after agreeing on a new cessation of hostilities with the Russian military forces that remain in the vicinity of the city.

The evacuation operation will be carried out from three points by municipal buses and, following the planned route, in private transport, following the buses in a column, indicated the Mariupol City Council.

Previously, the militias of the self-proclaimed republic of Donetsk had announced the soon opening of humanitarian corridors in both Mariupol and the city of Volnovakha, in southeastern Ukraine.

The first attempt to evacuate the civilian population of both cities took place on Saturday and ended in absolute failure after Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaching the temporary ceasefire in force around these two towns.

Russia announced a ceasefire on March 5 so that civilians could leave the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the humanitarian corridors and routes were agreed with Ukraine during the round of talks held in Belarus.

At least 84 people managed to leave Mariupol through humanitarian corridors, despite attempts by Ukrainian nationalists to prevent evacuation efforts.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) explained that it remains in contact with the parties to facilitate exits in the midst of a situation that they have described as disheartening.

President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 the launch of a "special military operation" in Ukraine alleging that the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics needed help in the face of aggression by Kiev.

One of the fundamental objectives of this operation, according to Putin, is "the demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defense affirms that the military attacks are not directed against civilian installations, but rather seek to disable the war infrastructure.
