New $ 900 a month plan for families in DC

A new $ 1.5 million direct cash transfer pilot program, dubbed ‘Strong Families, Strong Future for DC,’ announced Thursday Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Planning and Development (DMPED).

The goal is to support maternal health and promote economic mobility. The nonprofit Martha’s Table will implement the program, which will provide $ 900 per month for one year to 132 new and expectant mothers in the District’s zones 5, 7 and 8.

“Having a newborn is a huge life change, and we also know how critical those first months and years are to a baby’s life. This program is about supporting new and pregnant moms with cash so they have the autonomy and flexibility to make the best decisions for themselves and their baby, ”said Mayor Bowser.

“The Strong Families, Strong Future DC pilot project builds on the work we have done to address disparities in maternal health outcomes,” she added.
