While many enjoy the reds and golds of fall foliage, some people are already thinking about cherry blossoms. The National Cherry Blossom Festival held its 2024 launch event on Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Building in downtown DC.
“Look around this room. We have cherry blossoms in the room, everything is pink. “We are ready to begin a countdown of less than four months until the 2024 National Cherry Blossom Festival,” said Diana Mayhew, president and CEO of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
The launch gave festival organizers the opportunity to reveal the official artwork for the 2024 festival: DC artist Nicholas Shi's painting of pink cherry blossoms filling a blue sky above the monuments in the mall. The artwork will adorn posters and other festival merchandise.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival will take place from March 20 (the first day of spring) to April 14, 2024.
Mayhew said that over the four weekends of the festival, you can expect “big events and lots of other events, exhibits and performances in between.”
Among the events will be the Pink Tie Party on Friday, March 15 at Union Station. The opening ceremony at the Tidal Basin will take place on Saturday, March 23. The festival parade will take place on Saturday, April 13.
Last year, the festivities featured large crowds gathering in advance to view the flowers during peak bloom. More than 1.5 million visitors were expected to pack the Tidal Basin, and festival officials can likely expect that same number or more for next year's events.
