El total de 97 ballenas piloto que quedaron varadas en la playa Cheynes, al suroeste de Australia, murieron, después de que las autoridades decidieran practicar la eutanasia a 43 de ellas para minimizar su sufrimiento por el deterioro de su estado de salud.

Las primeras 54 quedaron sin vida el martes. Unos 250 voluntarios se sumaron a los 100 expertos en una lucha para salvar al resto durante la jornada del miércoles.
En un primer momento, remolcaron a aguas profundas a las supervivientes, pero horas después volvieron a quedar varadas, lo que terminó por convencer a los expertos de que era mejor sacrificarlas.

"Los veterinarios evaluaron a las ballenas y confirmaron que mostraban signos de rápido deterioro (...) Nuestro equipo determinó entonces que la acción más apropiada y humana era eutanasiar a las restantes para evitar prolongar su sufrimiento", declaró en Twitter el Servicio de Parques regional.
"El operativo no fue tan bien como esperábamos. Obviamente no era el resultado deseado", apuntó en un vídeo Peter Hartley, oficial del Departamento de Biodiversidad y Conservación de la región Australia Occidental.

El fenómeno de ballenas pilotos y otros mamíferos marinos que encallan en playas es común en Australia y Nueva Zelanda, sin que los expertos hayan logrado esclarecer con precisión los motivos.
