After the American business software company, Intuit was denounced by its users who pointed out that they were deceived into paying free tax services by TurboTax, a software package for preparing US tax returns.
This week, Josh Stein, North Carolina's attorney general, reported that he reached an agreement with the company for $4.5 million dollars which will be distributed to the more than 150,000 residents affected in the state.
According to the statement, residents eligible for compensation will be contacted by the settlement fund administrator, Rust Consulting, who will contact residents via email and send payment checks via email.
In this regard, Attorney General Josh Stein noted: “I am pleased that over 150,000 North Carolinians will get their money back that they were tricked into paying when they filed their tax returns. My office will hold companies accountable when they mislead people to make money,” he said.
The company in total will pay some $141 million in the multi-state settlement, which will be distributed to 4.4 million people across the country. According to the announcement, the amount of money that each affected person will receive will be based on the number of fiscal years for which they qualify. In this sense, most taxpayers are expected to receive between $29 and $85.
“Eligible taxpayers include those who paid to file your federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018, but they were eligible to file for free through the IRS Free File Program," the statement said.
