A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck a sparsely populated part of the West Texas desert on Wednesday, causing shaking that was felt as far as Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
The quake struck at 3:30 p.m., according to Jim DeBerry, a National Weather Service meteorologist in the west Texas city of Midland. He noted that the quake's magnitude means it likely caused damage in the remote oil-growing and bushland area, but none had been reported so far.
DeBerry said the epicenter was about 23 miles (37 kilometers) south of Mentone, a small community south of the state line with New Mexico and about 95 miles (153 kilometers) west of Midland.
State Rep. Eddie Morales Jr., whose district includes Mentone, said he spoke with local authorities and there were no reports of injuries. He tweeted that state officials "will be checking roads, bridges and other infrastructure as a precaution."
DeBerry said there were reports of people feeling vibrations caused by the quake about 200 miles (320 kilometers) to the west, in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, and in places to the south such as Terlingua, a small community near the Rio Grande ( or Grande) and Big Bend National Park.
