Mexico registers year-on-year reduction in homicides by 9.1% | News


The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, announced this Wednesday that in that country a total of 15,400 intentional homicides were registered year-on-year until June 2022, which is equivalent to a reduction of 9.1 percent compared to the previous period.

During the morning conference headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the official read the monthly security report, where she noted that in June 2022 alone, the country recorded 2,662 homicides.

This figure is lower than that provided in May of this year, considered the most violent month so far, since 2,826 deaths from murder were reported.

The highest representative of the portfolio also evaluated that last June was the “lowest for five years” and assured that they are working in coordination to lower the rates of violence in the Latin American country.

Of the 32 states that make up Mexico, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Baja California, Jalisco, Chihuahua and the State of Mexico together account for 49 percent of homicides.

The secretary explained that so far in 2022, Mexico averages 84 intentional homicides daily, ten less than the average of 94 reported during the first half of 2021.

Likewise, the country reported in the first half of the year a reduction of 21 percent in crimes against health, a decrease of 8.02 percent in femicides and a decrease of 12.8 percent in financial crimes, compared to a similar period of time. 2021.

Rodríguez pondered the value and precision of the strategy against violence that began to be implemented at the end of 2018, which has counted on the coordinated work between the different institutions of the Mexican State to obtain a downward trend in crimes.

In July 2018, before López Obrador assumed the presidency of the country, 3,074 cases of intentional homicides were reported; hence, lowering the rates of violence became one of the main challenges of his government.
