Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been the two greatest figures that have dominated the global soccer scene for almost 20 years without interruption. Just hours before the start of the World Cup in Qatar 2022, the Argentine star shared an unexpected photo with the Portuguese and caused a huge stir on different social networks.
This Saturday afternoon, Messi's Instagram account published a photo with CR7 in the middle of what would be a game of chess. The post and the writing shared by the attacker make it clear that it is a paid collaboration.
“Victory is in the mind. A long tradition of craftsmanship building trunks photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Louis Vuitton,” she wrote.
In the image Messi is seen wearing a black sweater and one of his hands on his chin while with the other he moves a chess piece, which are placed on a trunk of the French brand. For his part, Cristiano also wears a sweater of the same color and places one of his hands on his head while resting his arm on his chest.
The publication of the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player exceeded 2.5 million likes in just 30 minutes. It also reached more than 60,000 comments. Among the responses, those of Sergio 'Kun' Agüero's son, Benjamín and Lionel's wife, Antonela Rocuzzo, stand out.
The couple of the albiceleste star wrote: "Great", while Agüero Jr assured that it was the best photo he has seen all day.
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have starred in one of the longest-running rivalries in football. For more than a decade, most of the collective and individual titles were fought. Between them they have accumulated 12 Ballon d'Ors.
Recently, the Portuguese star offered an interview to the journalist Piers Morgan to be honest about his situation at Manchester United and took the opportunity to comment on the Argentine.
“He is an amazing player. He is magical. As a person we shared the stage for 16 years, but I'm not a friend. A friend is who you are with at his house and you talk on the phone, but it is as if he has been a partner for me, ”he said.
"He's a guy I respect. Besides, he always spoke well of me. Even his wife and my partner respect each other, both are Argentine. Messi is a great guy and does everything for football. He is the best player I've ever seen, along with Zidane. I have never had dinner with him, but I would love to, ”he concluded.
The one in Qatar is the fifth and very possible last World Cup for both figures. Messi's team arrives as a favorite after being champion of America.
