A giant panda wearing an ice suit named Bing Dwen Dwen is the mascot designed by China for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which will take place in that capital from February 4 to February 20.

Bing is the Chinese character for the word ice and also symbolizes purity and strength. Dwen Dwen, on the other hand, represents children and their characteristics such as naivety and tenderness as well as healthiness.
Among the features that stand out in the design is a colorful halo around the face or the protection of the ice suit that surrounds the face of the friendly animal, which represents the advanced technologies that will accompany the athletes in the winter event.
On the other hand, in the palm of his left paw, Bing Dwen Dwen wears a heart that represents the host country's hospitality towards spectators and athletes.
The creator of the striking design was Cao Xue and it was selected from more than 5,800 proposals from China and 35 other countries that were part of the global competition organized by the Organizing Committee of the games.
Each of the designs was judged by leading Chinese and other domestic designers, and the final selection was made by teams from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and Jilin University of the Arts.
The choice of a panda as the central figure of the design was really what was expected since the giant panda is the national animal of China, moreover, at the Beijing 2008 summer event the five Fuwa mascots were also pandas because of the relationship between this animal and China and its symbolism.
The Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China and executive president of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee, Gou Zhongwen; Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach were in charge of presenting the mascot at a ceremony that took place at the Shougang Ice Hockey Arena in September 2019.
