In a statement, the SNAI indicated that as a result of "the incidents" recorded this day in the social rehabilitation center, in addition to the 15 deaths, there is a preliminary report of 21 injured people.

This event became the eighth massacre in an Ecuadorian detention center since 2021.

According to official statistics, in the South American country more than 400 inmates have lost their lives in massacres linked to drug trafficking since February 2021.

The prison authorities indicated that due to the brawls inside the prison, police officers entered the prison in order to regain control of the prison.

Hours earlier, the Alliance Against Prisons, in a message posted on Twitter, demanded action to ensure the lives of people deprived of liberty in Cotopaxi, after receiving complaints from relatives that disturbances were taking place in that prison.
