“Yes, we are going because it will be the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Allende, of the military coup carried out by General Pinochet against the democratic, legitimate government of President Allende. It will be 50 years in September and I will go to the act," declared the president.

In conversation with reporters who accompanied him on a work tour he carried out in the city of Chetumal, in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, López Obrador stressed that with Chile there is "a very good relationship (...) we have economic and commercial cooperation ”.

Last Friday, the current Mexican ambassador to Chile and proposed as the new Foreign Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, announced the upcoming trip of the Mexican president to the Chilean capital.

"On September 11 we will come with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador," Barcena said during the inauguration of the documentary and photographic exhibition "50 years after the Coup d'état in Chile and the solidarity of Mexico."

At the beginning of 2023, López Obrador announced that he was preparing a tour of South America, which, in addition to Chile, includes stays in Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

This will be the first visit that the Mexican president will carry out to South America in almost five years of government.
