León joins Real Madrid in the 2025 Club Super World Cup: What is the format like?

León FC defeated LAFC 1-0 (3-1 on aggregate) and was crowned for the first time in the Concacaf Champions League that gives the club a pass to the Super Club World Cup in 2025 which will have a new format and will include Rayados de Monterrey, Real Madrid, Chelsea, among others.

Mexican clubs have won 17 of the 18 editions of the Concacaf Champions League. Only the Seattle Sounders have been able to win a title, which they did in 2022.

The representatives of this tournament will be:12 teams from UEFA (Europe), 6 from Conmebol (South America), 4 from Concacaf (North America), 4 from CAF (Asia), 1 from OFC (Oceania) and a representative of the host country.

For Concacaf there is one place open since the Rayados de Monterrey, the Seattle Sounders have qualified and now Leon FC. For UEFA there are Chelsea, Real Madrid and whoever wins between the final of Manchester City and Inter Milan.

The current version of the Club World Cup will stop playing from 2023. This new format will have 32 teams with 8 groups of 4 clubs divided into different confederations.

By Conmebol, Brazil already has two representatives with Palmeiras and Flamengo who were champions of the Copa Libertadores in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The champion of the South American tournament of 2023 and 2024 is still pending and they will also be part of the new tournament created by FIFA.

For Asia, Al Hilal will attend the Club World Cup thanks to the laurel obtained in 2021, Urawa Red Diamonds did the same in the 2022-23 edition and, like León, they will play the 2023 and 2025 edition of the Club World Cup. The 2023 and 2024 confederation champions remain pending.

The teams from Africa are Al Ahly from Egypt and Wydad Casablanca from Morocco, winners of the Africa Cup for Clubs. A ranking will determine which is the chosen representative of 2023 and the champion in 2024 of the African Cup will attend the Super Club Tournament.
