Leo Messi and Antonella Roccuzzo, a love that crossed time and distance

(CNN Spanish) — “Loving you more is impossible.” With that message she congratulated Antonella Roccuzzo to her husband, Leo Messi, when he turned 35 in June. To those who don’t know her story, it might seem like an exaggerated statement. For her millions of followers, it is one of the many samples of exceptional love that has withstood time and distance.

Messi and Antonella met when they were children. literally children. They were seven years old and she was the cousin of a friend of his. By then Messi was already incorporated into the lower divisions of Club Newell’s, one of the two most important clubs in Rosario, his hometown.

They could have spent adolescence together, but it was not the case. Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency and at the age of 13 he signed for Barcelona and moved to Spain. As part of the contract, the Blaugrana club agreed to pay for the treatments that Messi needed.

A few years later, however, they met again. According to local media reports, a friend of Rocuzzo’s died in a traffic accident in 2005 and he traveled to Argentina to accompany her. For the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Messi already introduced Antonella Rocuzzo as his girlfriend.

“We’ve known each other for a long time, he knows me perfectly, he knows how to get into me at all times and especially in the bad ones. He is a person who practically does not have bad days, who is always in a good mood and is a spectacular companion,” he said. the 10 of the albiceleste in an interview with Sport.

Antonella went to live with him in Casteldefels, in Barcelona, and the ocean that had separated them disappeared forever.

Two years after their reunion, their first son, Thiago, was born, and in 2015 Mateo was born. And another two years later, the popular couple decided to say ‘yes’ but not in Barcelona, the city that saw Messi grow up and become one of the best players in history, but in Rosario, the Argentine city where the two were born and met. There they had, in 2017, what was surely the wedding of the century for the people of Rosario.

“Here we go Qatar!” Says the message that Antonella posted on Instagram this week along with a photo of her three children dressed from head to toe with the Argentine team, one of the eight favorites to win the World Cup.

Messi has told some details about his children, with whom he has been seen playing football, for example during the holidays. Thiago “suffers a lot when we lose,” he said in an interview with Fox. “He lives it, he suffers it, he wants to be by my side because he knows defeat hurts me,” he explained, at a time when Mateo was still too young to fully understand what was happening

His middle son has a strong personality, according to the father. “Mateo looks at me and challenges me,” he said in an interview with TyC Sports, in contrast to the older man’s attitude. “You tell Thiago things once and he already did it.” The player has recognized that one of the things he suffers from is being away from the little ones when they cannot accompany him.

It is likely that the World Cup in Qatar will be the last for Messi, who has an impressive track record, especially with Barcelona, but has not managed to lift the World Cup with the albiceleste. He arrives undefeated in qualifying and with the 2021 Copa América title as backup. That is why all eyes are on the team led by Lionel Scaloni, who has a phenomenal streak of 36 games without losing.
