Last minute of the war in Ukraine, live | Russia intensifies suffocation of the last Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol | International

The war in Ukraine is in a new phase. The Russian army is working on its logistics, reconstitutes the forces it withdrew from the battle of kyiv – which are not yet fighting, according to the Institute for War Studies (ISW) – and is preparing its offensive in Donbas. The Russian attack now has four foci: occupy Severodonetsk and Rubizhne in Lugansk from the east; advance from Izium to the north on Donetsk; control Mariupol; and defend their positions in Kherson, in the south of the country.

On the Izium and Severodonetsk axes, the Russian military has followed up with small attacks in the last 48 hours. They have not waited for the arrival of reinforcements, and according to the ISW that contributes to the fact that their gains have been “limited” and that the Russians are “incurring significant losses”. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that two Russian battalions tried unsuccessfully to take Dovhenke and Dmytrivka.

The Russians are regrouping in Kharkiv to reinforce the axis on Izium. With the arrival of new troops, the ISW hopes that the Russians will advance to the southeast of that city, perhaps turning first to the southwest to encircle the Ukrainian defensive positions, strong on the road between Izium and Slovyansk, one of the Russian objectives in the region. To the east, in the Lugansk region, Russian forces continue their attacks on Severodonetsk and Rubizhne, so far unsuccessful. The ISW reports artillery fire and some urban combat.

Mariupol has not yet fallen, but it is still surrounded and the Ukrainians are losing ground. Local authorities put between 20,000 and 22,000 dead in the city since the beginning of the offensive. In the south of the country, the Russian objective seems to be to defend Kherson from Ukrainian counter-attacks. Russian forces did not make any significant territorial advances in that region, according to the ISW.
