Kimberly Mata-Rubio is seeking to be the next mayor of Uvalde, where 19 students and two teachers were killed in 2022 following a shooting at Robb Elementary School. One of the fatalities was Lexi, Mata-Rubio's daughter.

Mata-Rubio would become the first woman to win the mayoralty if she wins this Tuesday's elections. Before the tragedy she worked as a reporter for the Uvalde Leader-News channel. After the death of her daughter, she has become a spokesperson for greater gun control laws and has offered testimony before the United States Congress.

In addition to healing the collective trauma experienced by Uvalde residents, Mata-Rubio will also have to deal with the community's economic problems. In the majority Latino city, 1 in five residents lives in poverty.
