Sentence against journalist José Zamora scheduled in Guatemala

The former assistant prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor's Office against Impunity (FECI), Samari Gómez, was acquitted of the crime of revealing confidential information for which she requested eight years in prison.

However, Zamora was sentenced to six uncommutable years in prison and must pay a fine of 300,000 quetzales.

Samari Gómez must be released immediately and Zamora must be kept in prison, according to the court's verdict.

Gómez worked in the FECI and was under the command of former prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval, who is in exile.

Zamora is nationally and internationally recognized for his investigations into corruption and a strong critic of the government of President Alejandro Giammattei.

The sentence comes after several organizations denounced an escalation of authoritarianism in the country that includes the persecution of journalists and judicial officials and the exclusion of candidates who are not part of the traditional political forces.
