Authorities in Birmingham, Alabama, launched an investigation after police officers tased and arrested the conductor of a school orchestra last Thursday during a high school football game.

Johnny Mims refused to interrupt the concert, which had been extended for 20 minutes after the end of the game. On several occasions the officials asked Mims to stop the music and turned off the court lights. The director argued that it was the last song.

At the end of the musical theme, Mims was subdued by several officers and received shocks from a stun gun. Charges were filed against him for disorderly conduct, harassment and resisting arrest. The director's legal defense has indicated that the arrest was illegal.

In late August, a teenager with a gun was arrested during a football game in the nearby town of Hueytown, which may have contributed to the tense atmosphere at this week's sporting event.
