JD, Shopify will help US merchants sell in China

JD.com Inc., China’s largest online retailer, and Canadian e-commerce services company Shopify on Tuesday announced a strategic cooperation to give US merchants greater access to JD.com’s 550 million customers.

The companies said the venture will allow American brands to start selling in China in three to four weeks instead of the usual one-year window for starting cross-border sales.

The service will take advantage of JD’s network of 1,300 warehouses and 200,000 employees in China, the companies said. They will provide support and transportation, they added.

JD.com reported that its sales rose 33% from a year ago to 218.7 billion yuan ($34.4 billion) in the latest quarter.
