Italy requests extradition of Robinho, ex-soccer player sentenced to nine years in prison

The Italian Ministry of Justice requested this Tuesday to Brazil the extradition of the Brazilian Robinhoex-striker of the 'Canarinha', Real Madrid, AC Milan, among others, after the definitive sentence to nine years in prison for the former soccer player for the gang rape of a young Albanian woman in Milano, Italyin 2013.

In recent months there have been contacts between the authorities of both countries and, according to the Italian agency ANSAit is “likely” that the Brazilian authorities have facilitated the location of Robert de Souzawhich has led to the formal request for extradition by the Italian justice system.

The former Brazilian international was found guilty for his participation, along with others five peopleof sexually assaulting the woman of Albanian origin, then give him alcohol to drink in a nightclub in the capital of Lombardy. The conviction was upheld by an appeals court in 2020.

Nevertheless, the 38-year-old former soccer player, who also played in Manchester City and Santos from Brazilyou will probably not have to serve the sentence in ItalySince the Constitution of Brazil does not allow the extradition of its citizens.

Robinho could only be detained if outside Brazilian territory, when the law comes into force international arrest warrant.
