Un incendio forestal desatado el pasado viernes en la localidad portuguesa de Castelo Branco ha destruido hasta el domingo una superficie 7.000 hectáreas y mantiene en acción a una fuerza de más de mil bomberos, informó José  Guilherme, comandante de las operaciones de extinción y rescate.

"El potencial de este incendio podría llegar a más de 20.000 hectáreas. Los más de mil efectivos operacionales que permanecerán en el terreno están actualmente tratando de garantizar la estabilización del fuego, cuyo perímetro ya alcanza los 60 kilómetros", indicó el oficial en una conferencia de prensa.

El humo y las cenizas emanadas del siniestro llegaron el pasado sábado a la ciudad santuario de Fátima y otro punto caliente movilizó este domingo a más de 300 bomberos en Odemira, cerca de la costa suroeste del país. Los bomberos están enfocando sus esfuerzos en varios puntos calientes para evitar que las llamas volvieran a comenzar, ahondó Guilherme.



Tiago Bugio, uno de los responsables de Protección Civil indicó en la mañana del domingo que "Las llamas están cediendo el paso a los medios de combate". Más adelante precisó que dos frentes del incendio permanecían activos, mientras que un tercero, ubicado hacia el sur y a la región turística región de Algarve, había sido controlado.

Como las temperaturas podrían alcanzar los 40 ºC en algunas regiones del centro de Portugal, Protección Civil advirtió desde el sábado que el riesgo de incendio sería "muy alto o máximo en todo el territorio" durante los "próximos días". Además, reconoció que "es un área muy grande con muchas casas y pueblos aislados".
