IMSS cares for 59% of patients with hemophilia in the country

Of the 6 thousand people living with hemophilia in our country, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) serves 50%, reported Berenice Sánchez Jara, pediatric hematologist at the General Hospital of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza.

He explained that hereditary hemophilia is linked to the X chromosomeand although it is more common in men, there are women who can develop it.

He added that 80% of hemorrhages occur at the joint or muscle level, and if not treated in a timely manner, they can cause alterations in the mobility of people who suffer from them.

“The main warning symptoms to suspect hemophilia, particularly in its severe form, are early bleeding events. For example, minors who are learning to walk and have pain in the knee, ankle or inflammation."

“That during tooth eruption babies present hemorrhage, or that, when applying a screening or a vaccine, bleeding or the formation of a hematoma occurs,” he explained.

Before this panorama, The IMSS developed the Comprehensive Care Protocol (PAI) for hemophiliathrough which, from the first level of care, strategies are provided for early diagnosis, preventive treatment and early rehabilitation to avoid and stop bleeding that can be life-threatening.
