Heat waves will continue in July and August, after June record: WMO
The intense heat that has already broken the record for the highest average monthly temperature in June and two records for average daily temperature in the first half of July it will continue for the next two weeks and could last until Augustthe World Meteorological Organization said today.
The scientific arm of the United Nations envisions that temperatures will remain above normal in the Mediterranean region, with weekly temperatures up to 5 degrees Celsius above average.
"This extreme weather is becoming an increasingly frequent phenomenon of climate change and is having a major impact on human health, ecosystems, economies, agriculture, energy and water supplies," said the secretary general. of WMO, Professor Petteri Taalas.
The meteorological services of the United States and Morocco have also issued alerts for high temperatures for the coming weeks, which Taalas described as "urgent" and recalled the importance of reduce greenhouse gas emissions “as quickly and deeply as possible”.
If this situation is not reversed, the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Climate Change -the highest scientific authority on this matter- estimates that by 2050 around half of the European population could face a risk high or very high thermal overload in summer.
